Mains-wired alarm installation
Smoke and heat alarms wired to a permanent supply with battery backup, sited in the right positions for the layout.
Alarms
Smoke and heat alarms are the least interesting electrical item in a house right up until the one moment they matter. They are also the item most likely to be quietly disabled — a beeping alarm gets taken down at two in the morning and never goes back up.
We install, replace and relocate mains-wired alarms for homeowners and landlords, and sort out the ones that chirp, false-trigger or are simply past their service life.

Alarms linked so that one detecting means all sounding, which matters most on the floor furthest from the fire.
Detectors have a service life and become less reliable with age. Replacement is a quick job that is easy to overlook.
Heat detection rather than smoke detection where cooking would otherwise cause constant false alarms.
Alarms that sound for no reason, chirp continuously or trigger from steam or dust, diagnosed rather than removed.
Alarm provision for rented property, including replacement between tenancies and after tenant reports.
An alarm in the wrong place either does not detect early enough or goes off constantly. Detectors too close to a kitchen or bathroom pick up cooking and steam; too far from bedrooms and the sound does not wake anyone.
We look at the layout, the escape route and where a fire is most likely to start, then site the detectors accordingly. In most homes that means circulation spaces and landings, with heat detection where smoke detection would be a nuisance.
The usual cause is a backup battery reaching the end of its life, but it can also be dust in the chamber or an alarm that has simply aged out. If replacing the battery does not settle it, the detector itself is usually due replacement — and removing it is not the answer.
