Testing & Inspection

Electrical Testing & Inspections

Wiring does not tell you how it is getting on. It works until it does not, and the things that shorten its life — heat, moisture, damage, poor connections, alterations made by someone in a hurry — happen out of sight. Inspection and testing is how you find out the actual condition of an installation instead of assuming it is fine.

We carry out inspection and testing for homeowners who want to know where they stand, landlords looking after rented property, and buyers who would rather know about the electrics before they sign.

Inspections we carry out

Periodic inspection and testing

A structured inspection of an existing installation, commonly referred to as a PIR, covering the board, circuits, earthing and accessories.

Landlord electrical inspections

An assessment of the condition of the installation in a rented property, with any issues set out clearly so they can be prioritised.

Pre-purchase inspections

A check of the electrical installation before buying, so the condition of the wiring and board is a known quantity rather than a surprise.

Post-fault verification

Testing after repair or alteration work to confirm the circuit is sound and behaving as it should.

Circuit-level testing

Where only part of an installation is in question, testing can be limited to the circuits that matter.

Commercial inspections

Inspection and testing for offices, shops and small commercial units, scheduled around trading hours.

What an inspection actually involves

There are two halves to it. The visual inspection covers what can be seen: the board and its protective devices, the condition of accessories and fittings, earthing and bonding, signs of overheating or damage, and any obvious alterations.

The testing half is instrument work — continuity, insulation resistance, polarity, earth fault loop impedance and RCD operation. Together these show whether the installation is doing what it should under fault conditions, not just under normal use.

You get a plain explanation of what was found, what needs attention now, what is worth planning for and what is simply worth knowing about.

What tends to come up

  • Boards with limited or no residual current protection
  • Circuits with damaged or deteriorated insulation
  • Missing or inadequate bonding
  • Accessories showing heat damage at the terminals
  • Alterations and additions made without testing afterwards
  • Outdoor and garage circuits that have taken in water
